The Nine Standards are to be found in the Howgills in Cumbria. They are nine pillars of rocks standing up to nine feet in height. No one knows why they are there but local rumour has it that they were put there to frighten the invading Scots who, on seeing what appeared to be nine giants on a hilltop, would flee in terror and leave the area alone!
Suffice to say, the views from the Nine Standards are spectacular but the low temperatures to be found up there, even on the hottest summer's day make enjoying the views difficult. The longest we have managed is the time it took us to drink a cup of tea by which time we were well and truly cooled down after our climb (and this was during a heatwave).
